about threatening e-mails that were anonymous and that, of course, led to paula broadwell who led to david petraeus and the relationship that was then uncovered. how did general allen get into this mix? >> your question has the answer in it. basically, jill kelley complained she was getting harassing e-mails. the fbi eventually found who was sending the e-mails, but that caused them to look at both the e-mails that jill kelley was receiving and the ones that paula broadwell was sending. in the midst of looking at the e-mails jill kelley was receiving here are all these messages from general allen. so, you know, they -- the obviously concluded there was no crime in the e-mail exchanges he had with her, but they felt it should be referred to the defense department as a personnel matter, which is the same phrase they used when they told the director of national intelligence, general clapper, about what petraeus was doing. no crime in that what turned out to be an adulterous relationship, but the boss should know. >> the other thing that happened overnight we were watching real time a

pentagon correspondent barbara starr. she's getting new information on paula broadwell. what are you learning, barbara? >> wolf, some really stunning new information. cnn has learned from two u.s. officials that paula broadwell's security clearance has been suspended. she is a serving reservist, if you will, with the u.s. army, a military intelligence analyst. as such, she would at least have a secret level security clearance. we are now told that security clearance suspended pending the outcome of several investigations. we went to the army to ask them for an official response. they will not say anything except the following. and let me read it to you. that general petraeus and paula broadwell tried to cover their tracks. >> chris, it's a tactic that terrorists and teenagers have used for a better part of the decade. you create one web-based e-mail account like yahoo! using an anonymous name. what they do, they write e-mails but then never say them, they save them as drafts. using them in a digital drop box. the members of that secret group can logon to read those drafts. fbi agents believe that's what cia director david petraeus and mistress paula broadwell did with a gmail account that petraeus created. it's a difficult tactic to trace. the road it took to get to its destination. government can get around that by subpoenaing information from that e-mail provider. that information can help reveal a all of the e-mail accounts used at a single location. investigation which revealed the affair between general petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell. the newest twist, nbc confirming that broadwell e-mailed general allen first from the handle kelley patrol warning him about jill kelley painting her negatively.
